It's a triumph for Tokyo-born graphic artist and animator Fumio Obata, who moved to Britain in 1991 to study illustration at Glasgow School of Art before becoming artist in residence at Angouleme in 2008. In his memoir, Spiegelman tells the story of his family during and after the Holocaust, depicting — in a bizarre tack that takes the story outside the realm of the expected — Jews as mice, Nazis as cats and Poles as pigs. Some say that books of as few as 48 pages can be classified as graphic-novels.
