Lipsius’s cast of mind was not so relativist as that of Montaigne. reflecting the image of God in man of Genesis 1:26. and certain that he believed both in peace and in the need for civic harmony to be underpinned by the rites and ceremonies of a locally adopted civic religion. One early Renaissance figure is the poet Dante (1265–1321), the first writer to embody the spirit of the Renaissance. Since the middle ages, though, things were different in Europe.
