This marks AM’s advancement to fellowship in the college as a scholarship student. Anne Marvell, mother of the poet, buried in the Church of Holy Trinity, Hull. ’ The wide misery and heavy costs of the calamity met with some relief from other York ridings and from further afield, but of ‘this terrible pestilence’ it was calculated that some ‘two thousand seven hundred and thirty persons died, exclusive of those who fled out of the town and died elsewhere, and even who died of other disorders, which according to one authority almost doubled the number’.

Later versions of the story embellish it increasingly, with Biographia Britannica claiming that the mother of the drowned woman supported AM thereafter (see below 1760): ‘Mrs. ) died only in 1653 and her will leaves nothing to AM (Margoliouth 357–9), but such report may reflect the sponsorship by her sister Anne Sadleir of AM’s father and family (see 28 April 1627 above; 1653 below). Already in the 1640s, Fuller adds of the rev. Andrew Marvell that ‘His excellent comment upon Saint Peter, is daily desired and expected, if the envy and covetousness of private persons for their own use, deprive not the public of the benefit thereof’.
