Growing Venus Flytrap as an indoor plant.
Venus Flytraps do very well as indoor plants for 1-2 year in an eastern, southern, or western exposed window.
-only use plastic or fully glazed pots(glazed on the inside as well as out). This helps lock out any impurities and possibly minerals (if using terra cotta) that can poison and kill the flytrap overtime.
-Keep a lid or saucer (or the terrarium part can be used) with filtered, rain, or distilled water coming up no further than 1" up the pot. Allow the plant to soak up all of the water before refilling. The watering process should be done 2-3 times weekly for indoor Flytraps. during the April-Mid. October time frame, and then only once a week for the rest of October all the way through March. Make sure to empty water out between waterings to keep algae from growing.
-Remember, after 1-1.5 years of being grown indoors. Your Venus flytrap will require cold dormancy to allow it to continue to survive.
This is easily achieved by placing the plant outdoors preferably in a larger pot as in detailed in the "Growing Venus flytrap as perennial/sustainable plants section. If temperatures are warm, make sure to first introduce your plant to outside morning sun. This will allow to adjust to outdoor light without getting burned foliage. Make sure the plant receives morning sun for about two weeks before moving into stronger sunlight.
-To encourage necessary annual dormancy for house plant Venus flytraps, we recommend putting the fly trap in a cool room, garage, or anywhere temperatures would average in the 50s/40s or colder. Also make sure that the plant is by a window during this time starting in mid October. Even though the flytrap will not be actively growing during this time frame, it is still good to have to be near a window.
-Venus Flytraps can die back during the winter months, or look unhappy. This is no big deal for the flytrap, and simply part of their natural dormancy process.
Growing Venus flytrap as a Sustainable/Perennial plant:
Venus Flytrap are actually surprisingly cold hardy and can take temperatures to at least -10F. They are being grown as perennial plants as far north as the pine barrens in New Jersey. According to the USDA, the state of New Jersey is mostly cold hardiness zone 6a. (-10F)
-Venus flytraps are also being gown in USDA Zone 6b in Tennessee in planters with simulated bog conditions.
-The easiest way to simulate bog conditions is to plant them in sphagnum moss. Another option is peat moss with perlite mixed in topped with sphagnum moss.
-No drainage material around the drainage hole at the bottom of the pot.
-Place a catch tray or saucer under the pot for the warmer months to allow your Venus Flytrap to thrive! Remove saucer in the fall once the wet season begins, and repeat the same process when new growth begins to emerge in the spring.
-Keep Plant is full sun/part shade. Venus flytraps are tolerant of shade, but will not develop any pink or red coloration on their traps as they are known to do if they are in sun.
-Only ever water Venus Fly Traps with filtered, distilled, or rain water. Unfiltered tap water will eventually kill your Venus Fly Trap due to the impurities found in it. Venus Flytraps are very sensitive to these impurities.
-Do not be discouraged by any wintertime dieback that you may encounter on your flytrap. Venus flytraps are semi evergreen plants through winter months. It is not uncommon for plant to die all the way back in colder climates, but then push out new growth in the spring. The die back does not hurt the flytrap, and is part of its natural process.
If you live in a cold area with temps below freezing, please purchase a heat pack along with your plant. 72 hour packs should be used for 2 day shipping and 96 hour packs for 3 day + shipping. If you are unsure which heat pack is needed please message us with your zip code.
We do our best to check weather forecasts before shipping to ensure your plants are in transit on the best days however weather and shipping delays are unfortunately out of our control. WE ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR COLD DAMAGE IF A HEAT PACK IS NOT PURCHASED WITH YOUR ORDER.
